A damaged section at Bhasbhase in Beni Municipality 2 has become a serious bottleneck on the alternative Baglung to Beni road in Myagdi. Khabarhub reported on Monday, October 12 that vehicles are getting stuck in mud, struggling on the uphill section and forming traffic jams that can last for hours. The route matters beyond one neighbourhood because it connects Myagdi and Mustang with the national highway network and is carrying additional vehicles after damage affected the regular approach to the Maldhunga bridge.
Heavy rain on October 6 and 7 eroded and washed away part of the road near the meeting point of the Myagdi and Kaligandaki rivers, according to the report. One local resident said sections had collapsed by two to three metres along roughly 100 metres of road. The combination of a narrow carriageway, soft ground and increased traffic has raised the risk of vehicles becoming stranded. Bulldozers have been used to rescue vehicles that could not clear the damaged area, which shows that the route is passable only under constrained conditions rather than functioning normally.
The traffic pressure has a wider cause. Flooding washed away the approach road to the Maldhunga bridge linking Parbat and Baglung. Radio Nepal reported on October 9 that damage to a 114 metre approach had interrupted the main connection and affected travel toward Baglung, Myagdi, Mustang, East Rukum and Rolpa. Vehicles moving between Baglung, the Rukum districts, Pokhara and Kathmandu, along with traffic arriving from Jajarkot through the Mid Hills Highway, have therefore used the Baglung to Beni to Maldhunga alternative. That diversion sends more vehicles onto the weak Bhasbhase section.
Road authorities have attempted temporary repairs. The Road Division Office in Baglung previously improved drainage and reshaped the landslide prone area, but repaired sections have collapsed again. Dil Kumari Khatri, acting chief of the District Coordination Committee in Myagdi, told Khabarhub that the office had deployed equipment and worked to keep vehicles moving. She also said gravel placed on the road can be lost quickly because the ground continues to sink. That account explains why repeated short term work has not yet produced a durable solution.
Longer term measures are being pursued through the Road Division Office. The reported plan includes a concrete retaining wall near the river confluence, an improved road gradient and paving through the damaged section. These measures have not yet been completed, so they should be treated as planned work rather than current protection. The difficult terrain also means that a construction announcement does not establish when normal two way movement will resume. A useful next update would confirm the work schedule, traffic controls and whether vehicles of different sizes face separate restrictions.
The Bhasbhase problem sits within broader damage along the Kaligandaki corridor. The Kathmandu Post reported on October 7 that 41 locations between Maldhunga and Korala had been affected by river erosion, flooding, landslides or rockfall. At that point, the Mustang section had reopened to two way traffic while major trouble spots remained in Myagdi. The new October 12 report narrows the focus to the alternative route currently carrying diverted traffic. It does not mean that every section of the corridor is closed, but it confirms that the regional network remains fragile during a busy travel period.
Drivers and passengers should therefore allow extra time and seek current local traffic information before using the route. That is a practical inference from the reported jams and recovery work, not an official closure order. The verified development is that Bhasbhase has a roughly 100 metre damaged stretch, vehicles have needed machinery assistance, and traffic diverted by Maldhunga bridge damage is adding pressure. Conditions can change after repairs or renewed rain, so district authorities and road offices remain the best sources for a departure time decision.
