Dhading highway food hygiene assessment gives yellow grades to 14 of 17 establishments

News

Fourteen of 17 highway hotels and restaurants assessed in Dhading received yellow category D stickers, according to an Onlinekhabar report published on October 15. The establishments serve public transport passengers in Thakre, Dhunibesi and Galchhi. The report describes category D as normal, with two establishments rated good and one satisfactory. This is a dated food hygiene assessment, not a report that every business in the district has been inspected or ordered to close.

Triple Crown Resort in Galchhi Ward 4 and Transit House Restaurant in Dhunibesi Ward 1 received green category B stickers with two stars. New Kashthamandap Hotel in Thakre Ward 2 received a green category C sticker with one star. Onlinekhabar says the inspections followed public complaints about hygiene, food quality and prices. Those complaints explain the exercise but should not be treated as a proven finding of every alleged practice at each named establishment.

The Department of Food Technology and Quality Control’s official notice index dates its highway hotel categorisation notice to October 14. It also lists a separate notice for public transport operators, restaurant businesses and travellers dated October 13. The English news report is therefore fresh on October 15, while the underlying regulator publication is a day earlier. The department separately lists a new October 15 categorisation for Ramnagar, Jugedi, Dasdhunga and Mugling. That is a different geographic assessment and should not be merged into Dhading’s total of 17.

For readers seeking official information, the department’s website lists 9851319484 for matters involving food permits, monitoring and inspection. Its notices also distinguish routine inspection reports, mobile laboratory activity and product recalls. That distinction matters: a business grading, a laboratory result and a recall are different types of regulatory information. The Dhading news account does not provide a recall order or a finding that a particular meal caused illness. The published grades should be communicated in their stated terms.

The World Health Organization’s food hygiene guidance supplies useful background to the concerns raised by travellers. Its five principles cover cleanliness, keeping uncooked products apart from prepared food, adequate cooking, appropriate storage temperatures, and safe water and ingredients. Its guidance explains how hands, utensils and preparation surfaces can transfer microorganisms. It also advises protecting kitchen areas and food from insects and other animals. These are general prevention principles, not a separate WHO inspection of any Dhading restaurant.

The same guidance warns against leaving cooked food at room temperature for more than two hours. It recommends prompt refrigeration of perishable food, preferably below 5 degrees Celsius, and holding cooked dishes above 60 degrees before serving. Separate utensils and storage help prevent contact between raw animal products and food ready to eat. Fresh ingredients, safe water and checking expiry dates are additional parts of the guidance. Appearance alone cannot establish that every stage of preparation and storage met those practices.

As analysis, the practical value of the assessment is that it gives passengers and transport businesses a more specific reference than a general complaint about highway food. The colour, letter and star count should be kept together when describing a rating, rather than presenting these food hygiene categories as tourism hotel rankings. A yellow sticker should not be relabelled a closure notice, and a green sticker is not a permanent guarantee about every future meal. Clear dates and accurate categories make the information useful without overstating what inspectors established.
