Around 1.5 million people are expected to leave Kathmandu Valley for their hometowns during Dashain, according to a parliamentary committee report published by The Rising Nepal on October 5, 2026. Nearly one million travellers are expected to use public transport.
The report forecasts the busiest period from October 17 to 19, from Fulpati through Ashtami, when 200,000 to 300,000 people could leave the Valley. It also estimates that 150,000 to 250,000 passengers may depart before Ghatasthapana, while formal advance booking for remote destinations remained uncertain when the report was published.
The report recommends stronger traffic management, vehicle fitness checks and two drivers for journeys longer than 250 kilometres or eight hours. Travellers are advised to plan early, confirm tickets through reliable channels and check road conditions before departure.
