Karnali Yaks defended a modest total to defeat Janakpur Bolts by 19 runs in the third match of the 2026 Nepal Premier League at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. The match began at 5:00 pm Nepal time on Tuesday, October 27. Janakpur won the toss and chose to field, restricting Karnali to 132 for nine from 20 overs. Karnali then dismissed Janakpur for 113 in 19.3 overs.

The result gave the Yaks two points from their opening match and completed a day in which both successful teams defended first innings totals. Chitwan Rhinos had earlier beaten Biratnagar Kings by eight runs. For Karnali, the significant feature was not a dominant total but the collective response of a bowling unit that prevented Janakpur from building a sustained partnership during the chase.

Karnali had to recover from a difficult start. Mark Watt fell for one in the first over, Deepak Dumre made 13 from five balls and Hussain Talat scored three, leaving the Yaks 37 for three after 5.3 overs. Ariful Islam then gave the innings its main acceleration with 43 from 29 deliveries, hitting four sixes, while Pawan Sarraf made 37 from 37 balls with three sixes.

Their 42 run fourth wicket partnership moved Karnali to 79 before Ariful was dismissed in the 13th over. Gulshan Jha added 12 from nine balls and Nandan Yadav made nine. Janakpur captain Harmeet Singh led the bowling with three for 22 from four overs. Rahul Yadav took two for 15, Moeen Ali two for 19 and Lalit Rajbanshi one for 38.

Karnali struck 11 sixes but only one four, an unusual scoring pattern that helped compensate for the steady loss of wickets.

Janakpur never found one batter capable of controlling the chase. Mayan Yadav scored 14, Anil Sah 11 and Moeen Ali 19 from 22 balls. Kusal Perera made six and James Neesham 15. Harmeet offered the fastest middle order contribution with 19 from 13 deliveries, but he was dismissed with Janakpur still needing a substantial finish. Abhishek Tiwari top scored with 20 from 17 balls and briefly extended the contest with two sixes.

Karnali’s bowlers shared the work. Unish Singh returned three for 22 from four overs, including a maiden, while Hussain Talat took three for 26. Nandan Yadav finished with two for 13 from 2.3 overs and bowled Lalit Rajbanshi to end the match.

Janakpur’s highest partnership was 32 between Neesham and Harmeet, which illustrates the central problem: several batters started, but no pair stayed together long enough to bring the required rate under control.

The result provides an early measure of Karnali’s depth while Sahibzada Farhan remains unavailable for the franchise’s opening matches. Ariful and Sarraf repaired the innings, then Unish, Talat and Nandan converted 132 into a defendable score.

Analysis: defending a total at 6.6 runs per over does not by itself establish Karnali as a tournament favourite, but it shows that their domestic and overseas combinations can respond when the batting total is below expectation. Janakpur can also take positives from the first innings, particularly Harmeet’s three wickets and economical spells from Rahul and Moeen, yet their batting will need greater continuity.

Both sides return on Thursday, October 29. Janakpur are scheduled to face Kathmandu Gorkhas at 12:30 pm NPT, while Karnali meet Biratnagar Kings at 5:00 pm NPT. Those fixtures will quickly test whether Karnali can build momentum and whether Janakpur can recover from an opening defeat.
